I have never created a character for a game so this was a new experience for me. I created a few different designs for the main character for The Amazing Adventure.
This way I should no worry about the overall proportions of the sketch. Later I found out that both the scale, relation to the background images and the silhouette of this character would simply not work for our game.
Main character redone
I therefore started from scratch and come up with the concept below, which became our main game character. To make the expression clear I created a compact character that resembles a cub more than an adult animal.
After some testing it was also obvious that we could not use detailed textures for our game characters. They would simply blend too much with the background and not fit the overall style of the game. We therefore went with a simpler look, even though the textures in the concept art looks quite good.
For painting the backgrounds and other art I use a Wacom Intous 3. Doing this style of graphics only using a mouse would be a huge challenge. Using a digital pen also gives the art a human touch and adds to the characters personality.
I also did this rather strange looking one, but that was just as much an exercise in painting i Photoshop.
